BP Logo Parody

1. Balance, the formal balance of the logo and its simplicity is one of the reasons why I chose this logo parody. While I was looking through the other logo's, I found them quite cluttered and all over the place. The downward direction of the oil is also quite interesting because it forms an oil drop further showing the message of the new logo. Also, the logo shows harmony because the BP sunflower is not overpowering its oil filled counterpart. They are both equally shown.

2. The symbols used in the new logo are the BP sunflower and the oil. The use of the original BP logo, is part of the contest but it is interesting because it uses this logo as a symbol of the sun using the oil as the ocean. We've seen the picture many times, with the sun rising over the ocean. In fact if you google sunrise or sunset you see images just like the logo above. It was smart to use a familiar image to emphasize his logo. The BP sunflower setting into the ocean, which so happens to be oil. This is clever because the disaster that made everyone resent BP was partly because of the environmental damage it caused to oceans and its wildlife. The oil symbolizes the oceans that are now filled with oil. And the BP sunflower represents BP and setting into the oceans that it caused to be filled with oil. Damaging our environment and the species inhabiting it.

3. As I stated before, what this parody is saying about BP is that now that they created this mess, they must lay in it. They are drowning or 'setting' into the mess they made. The sun goes down every day and depending on where you see it, it may look like it is going under into the ocean. Which is similar to what is happening with BP now. Their company is going under with the oil that was released into the ocean due to their carelessness. Even with their efforts to fix their mess, there is still damage that has been caused symbolized by the oil drop at the bottom of the logo. In conclusion I believe that this logo parody expressed what was happening to BP now, and the illustrators thoughts on this subject. The illustrator presented a simple and balanced logo and uses great symbols to express themselves. It was really well done.
